Level 3

Multiskilling Instrumentation Level 3

Synopsis
This 2-day workshop builds on the content of Levels 1 & 2. Continues with Analytical measurements (pH, Conductivity and Turbidity), and covers several types of Density measurements, in pipes and tanks. A full day is spent on Loop Control basics, in this workshop, limited to single loop control.

Content
Analytical Measurement: Basics of pH and Conductivity measurement, as well as Turbidity. Covers basic principles involved, also how to calibrate these.
Density Measurement: Techniques in pipelines, including Nuclear, Mass Measurement and Coriolis. Also covers density in tanks.
Process Loop Control:
10
In this section (which lasts one day), delegates each have a computer with a program that accurately simulates a process, and the mechanisms of Proportional, Integral and Derivative action are explained, along with why each of these is there. They are then introduced to tuning rules which allow tuning values to be entered, and tested. There is also time to try out first-hand the effects on a process of changing Gain, Integral time and Derivative time, to understand first-hand the effects of these on the process. In addition, the simulation allows a process to follow the normal effects of process variation, and the controller can be tuned in real life, to get the optimal result.

Outcomes
A superior understanding of how a process is controlled, and how varying the tuning values can influence control for better or for worse.
